Follow-Along
Online week was tough, non-stop zoom and trying to cram lots of information. But it was fun learning new skills!
Diligently followed along as Ivan taught some new tools that I have not used before.

Exercise 1 :Recreate
Recreate
Objective: Recreate different icons
I have not used the curved pen tool before and a few other tools like morph tool. This is the outcome of the recreating exercise.
Iteration Process:
1. Yellow box with cursor: Ivan's method was so much easier! I was trying to draw the diagonal lines, copy the lines so that they are the same and clip it at the same position.
2. Shooting Star: I redid it after Ivan went through how we can change the width (Shift + W) at different points.
3. Hand: I redid the hand after I got the hang of the curve pen tool, the bottom was my first attempt :D

First hand attempt :'(
Exercise 2
: Draw-what-u-like
Draw-what-u-like
I like sushi so I draw sushi. Through this exercise, I had to draw a lot of curves which got me to be more comfortable with the curved pen tool.

Exercise 3
: Pattern Making
Pattern-Making

Breakfast Pattern: I wanted to experiment with a colourful pattern so I chose to draw breakfast food that I like. Before I learnt how to use the duplicate command, I was trying to shift by drawing square blocks to space them apart... I quickly applied this method after learning how to do so.
Japanese Pattern: This pattern was done during the Lino cut pattern making class which I decided to recreate in illustrator. So much faster to duplicate than to keep reapplying ink to print.
Exercise 4
: Self-Portrait
Self-Portrait

1. Colour Palette: I took a photo and used my base skin colour to generate the colour palette, choosing split complementary as I wanted to work with colours that I don't quite like - green and purple.
2. Background: I used the background that I have generated in the earlier exercise, flipped it around and changed out the colours and the placement of some of the elements to try out different composition.
3. Shadow: I used the shape builder tool and fill it black and set the opacity to 10% to create my shadow.
Exercise 5
: Typography
Typography

I was quite conservative with the shapes for the guide so I started with circles and squares and repeated it to form two versions, one for shorter letters like (a, c) and another for longer letters like (b and d).
I gave that the leg and ascender are of the same length to the "body" of the letter itself so that the letters look balanced.

Full set of typography!

When you art in arts school = unofficially unpaid employee of your family's company.
My family literally asked me to create an analog looking font that very night.
1. Create grid
2. Create letters
3. Add stroke
4. Offset stroke
5. Pathfinder -> Divide
I can now delete the stroke which gives me an invisible stroke between each filled shape.

Reflection
I enjoyed this class though it was conducted on Zoom, I learnt alot of new skills like using the shape builder, text on path, splitting text in two columns. I was able to incorporate them in my design work for school and work.
Branding Exercise
Branding Exercise
I applied the different techniques that I have learnt to create this poster. Tested out with aligning text along the path, pen tool and gradient tools as well.
Poster Breakdown
1. Rocco
Rocco is illustrated mid-air, performing a snowboard stunt. He’s dressed in a RHF gear that blends the retro colour scheme with a fun, energetic vibe.
2. Tagline
The bold tagline “Faith It Till You Make It” is prominently placed at the center of the poster, with the text slightly slanted, mimicking the motion and energy of a snowboarder going downhill. The staggering of the text in light and dark font adds movement which makes the poster appear more dynamic.
